Study Notes
Nose Anatomy
- The nose is the uppermost part of the respiratory tract and the peripheral organ of smell.
- The nose consists of an external nose and a nasal cavity.
- The nose has several functions including respiration, olfaction (smell), protection of the lower respiratory passage, conditioning inspired air, vocal resonance, and the nasal reflex function (sneezing).
External Nose Anatomy
- The external nose is a pyramidal projection in the mid-face.
- The external nose has five main parts: tip/apex, root/bridge, dorsum, nostrils/nares, and ala.
- The skin covering the external nose is thin and loosely attached to underlying structures.
- The skin over the apex and alae is thicker and more adherent and contains large sebaceous glands.
- Rhinophyma, a lobulated tumor, occurs due to hypertrophy of the sebaceous glands in the skin.
External Nose Skeleton
- The upper 1/3 of the external nose is bony and the lower 2/3 is cartilaginous.
- The bony framework of the external nose is formed by the two nasal bones (nose bridge), frontal process of the maxillae, and the bony part of the external nose that terminates as the piriform aperture.
- The cartilaginous part of the external nose is formed by five main cartilages and several additional tiny cartilages.
- The five main cartilages are two lateral cartilages, a single median septal cartilage, and two major alar cartilages.
- The cartilaginous tissue is anchored to the piriform aperture by fibrous tissue.
- The lateral cartilages articulate with the frontal process of the maxilla and nasal bone, the major alar cartilages inferiorly, and the septal cartilage medially.
- The minor alar or sesamoid cartilages are two or more tiny cartilages.
Blood Supply of the Nose
- The arteries of the nose are:
- The anterior ethmoidal artery: a branch of the ophthalmic artery
- The sphenopalatine artery: a branch of the maxillary artery
- The greater palatine artery: a branch of the maxillary artery
- The superior labial artery: a branch of the facial artery
- The lateral nasal artery: a branch of the facial artery
- Veins of the nose correspond to the arteries.
- Lymphatics drain into the submandibular and deep cervical nodes.
