Sources of Nigerian Heritages

  • Heritages can be categorized into two types: natural or ecological heritages and cultural heritages.
  • Nigeria is endowed with both types of heritages.

Natural/Ecological Heritages

  • Natural or ecological heritages emanate from nature and environment.
  • Nigeria has about 29 game reserves, 1129 forest reserves, 4 game sanctuaries, 2 strict nature reserves, and 8 national parks.

Cultural Heritages

  • Cultural heritage is the legacy of physical or tangible and intangible attributes of a group or society that are inherited from past generations.
  • Cultural heritages evolve from man’s ingenious activities, preserved and transmitted through oral traditions, in written literature or art works across generations of human societies.
  • Cultural heritages can be defined as the sum total of the people’s cherished arts, customs, festivals, sacred or worship sites, norms, values, ideologies, dress and dress-patterns, traditional monuments and architectures, technology and technological sites and other artifacts.

  • Preservation is vital because of its capacity to promote the past ways of life that are useful to contemporary societies.
