    Study Notes

    Neural Axis

    • Medial: Towards the midline
    • Lateral: Away from the midline
    • Ipsilateral: Same side
    • Contralateral: Opposite side
    • Decussate: Cross or intersect

    Brain Divisions

    • Prosencephalon (Forebrain)
      • Telencephalon: Cerebrum
      • Diencephalon: Thalami
    • Mesencephalon (Midbrain)
      • Mesencephalon: Midbrain
    • Rhombencephalon (Hindbrain)
      • **Metencephalon: ** Pons & Cerebellum
      • Myelencephalon: Medulla Oblongata

    Corpus Callosum

    • Genua: bend of Corpus Callosum
    • Splenium: Posterior end of the Corpus Callosum
    • Rostum: Anterior end of the Corpus Callosum

    Longitudinal Fissure

    • Divides the brain into left and right portions
    • Located in the sagittal plane

    Lobes of the brain

    • Frontal lobe: Personality, motor functions
    • Parietal lobe: Sensory, spatial awareness, language
    • Temporal lobe: Hearing, memory, language comprehension
    • Occipital lobe: Vision

    Sulci and Gyri

    • Central Sulcus: Separates the frontal and parietal lobes.
    • Lateral Sulcus: Separates the temporal lobe from the frontal lobe.

    Structures within the Brain

    • Basal Ganglia: Associated with Parkinson's disease
    • Limbic System: Memory & emotion, includes the hippocampus and amygdala
    • Thalamus: Relay center for sensory information

    Ventricles

    • Lateral Ventricles (LV): 2 Ventricles
    • Third Ventricle: Located in the diencephalon
    • Cerebral Aqueduct: Connects the 3rd and 4th ventricle
    • Fourth Ventricle: Located in the hindbrain
    • Central Canal: Channel that is continuous with the fourth ventricle

    Meninges

    • Dura Mater: Outermost layer of the meninges.
    • Arachnoid Mater: Middle layer of the meninges, contains CSF
    • Pia Mater: Innermost layer of the meninges, adheres to the brain.

    CSF (Cerebrospinal Fluid)

    • Found between the arachnoid and pia mater.
    • Circulates throughout the ventricles and spinal cord.
    • Provides support and protection for the brain and spinal cord.

    Brain Stem

    • Midbrain: Relays visual and auditory information, controls eye movement & muscle tone
    • Pons: Connects the hemispheres of the cerebellum and relays sensory information.
    • Medulla Oblongata: Controls autonomic functions such as breathing, heart rate and blood pressure.
