Study Notes
Neuroscience 3: Chapter 3 Study Notes
-
Neuroplasticity: The brain's ability to form new neural connections or reorganize in response to injury or experience. Synaptic plasticity is a specific example ("neurons that fire together, wire together").
-
Brain Injury:
- Traumatic brain injury: Concussions, spinal cord injuries.
- Acquired brain injury: Infections, toxin exposure, tumors, degenerative diseases, strokes.
-
Brain Injury Treatments: Brain and body cooling, early medical care, behavioral and social therapies, medications. Prevention is the best approach. Social participation is linked to reduced dementia risk (Sommerlad et al., 2023).
-
Brain Lateralization: The corpus callosum connects the brain's hemispheres. Each hemisphere controls/senses the opposite (contralateral) side of the body.
-
Upcoming Class: Completion of the neuroscience evolution section and midterm review (questions due Sunday at 8 pm).
-
PeerWise Participation: Optional participation reduces midterm/exam weight by 3%. Requires generating six high-quality questions (three before Test 1 and three before the end of class) and answering and providing feedback on six peers' questions. Course ID: 27478; Identifier: WLU student number.
-
PeerWise Question Creation: Each question needs one stem (the question itself), one correct answer, three distractor answers, explanations for the correct answer, and why distractors are incorrect. Tag questions by chapter.
-
PeerWise Answering: Comment on completed questions, rate difficulty and quality (0-5), and add useful tags to author's question.
-
PeerWise Tips (for creating good questions):
- Avoid clues in the stem (like using singular or plural forms to signal the answer).
- Don't give the answer away in another part of the question.
- Avoid mixing definite responses with qualifiers.
- Make distractor answers roughly the same length.
- Avoid implausible distractors.
- Ensure the correct answer is unique.
- Avoid simplistic questions; explore complex subjects and anticipate tough points for others.
- Avoid distractors that signal the correct answer, are too different, implausible, or can't be explained.
