Study Notes
Neurons are the primary cells of the brain responsible for transmitting information between different parts of the body. They have several components, including dendrites, which receive signals from other cells; axons, which transmit those signals away; cell bodies, where the nucleus resides; and synapses, where signals are transmitted across a small gap called the synaptic cleft. In addition to these structures, neurons also contain neurotransmitter vesicles filled with chemicals like serotonin that help send messages within the brain. Neurons can vary widely in their type, function, and shape to fulfill the many tasks required by our nervous system.
Test your knowledge on the components and functions of neurons, the primary cells responsible for transmitting information in the brain and body. Learn about dendrites, axons, cell bodies, synapses, and neurotransmitter vesicles!
