Study Notes
Neuronal Pathway of Crude Sensibility
- Pathway of crude sensibility originates from the contralateral part of the body, transmitting sensations of heat, cold, pain, crude touch, and pressure
- Located in the anterior and lateral funiculus of the spinal cord
Components of the Pathway
- Lateral Spino-Thalamic Tract: responsible for transmitting temperature and pain sensations
- Anterior Spino-Thalamic Tract: responsible for transmitting diffuse pressure, crude touch, and pain sensations
- Pathway of "Quick Pain": transmits sharp, acute, and bounded pain
Neurons Involved
-
1st Neuron: pseudounipolar cells of the spinal ganglion
- Dendrites run in spinal nerves
- Axons go to the posterior horn of the spinal cord
-
2nd Neuron: ipsilateral ncl. proprius of the posterior horn
- Axons cross over in the anterior white commisure at the same segment level
- Run contralaterally in the anterior and lateral funiculus
- Continue as spinal lemniscus to the thalamus
-
3rd Neuron: contralateral ventral posterolateral nucleus of the thalamus
- Axons form the thalamocortical tract
- Pass through the internal capsule to the postcentral gyrus
Additional Projections
- Some axons from 2nd neurons terminate in the intralaminar nucleus
- Projecting to the cingulate gyrus (limbic system) for emotional response to pain
This quiz covers the pathway of crude sensibility from the contralateral part of the body, including heat, cold, pain, crude touch, and pressure, in the anterior and lateral funiculus of the spinal cord.
