    Study Notes

    Network+ Guide to Networks 5th Edition - Chapter 1

    • The book is the Network+ Guide to Networks, 5th Edition, prepared by Dr. Salaheldin M. I. Edam, of the Sudan University of Science and Tech, School of Electronics.
    • Chapter 1 is titled "An Introduction to Networking".
    • Chapter 1's goals include: listing advantages of networked computing, distinguishing between client/server and peer-to-peer networks, listing elements common to client/server networks, describing network uses, identifying certifications available to networking professionals, and identifying skills/specializations for networking success.
    • Why Use Networks? Compared to standalone computers, networked computing offers:
      • Device sharing by multiple users
      • Saving of money and time
      • Central network management
    • Types of Networks Network models vary based on:
      • Computer positioning
      • Control levels over shared resources
      • Communication and resource sharing schemes
      • Key network models:
        • Peer-to-Peer
        • Client/server
    • Peer-to-Peer Networks
      • Common in home settings with multiple computers.
      • Direct computer communication.
      • Equal authority among computers.
      • Individual resource sharing.
      • May not prevent access to resources
      • Each computer can communicate with all other computers.
      • Advantages: simple configuration, inexpensive to set up.
      • Disadvantages: not flexible, not necessarily secure, not suitable for large installations.
      • Resource sharing methods often are user-responsible and not centrally controlled.
      • Potential for variations and security issues.
      • Commonly found in small homes or offices, and large networks using the internet (e.g., Gnutella, Freenet, original Napster, BitTorrent).
    • Client/Server Networks
      • Contain a central computer (server).
      • The server facilitates communication and resource sharing between client computers (workstations which are personal computers).
      • Known as workstations.
      • Central resource sharing controlled by server (data sharing, data storage space, devices).
      • No direct sharing of client resources.
      • Key roles within are:
        • Servers: run local applications, store data locally, use server as intermediary and for shared applications, data and devices. Clients: run local applications, store data locally, use server as intermediary.
      • Communication uses switches or routers.
      • Server requirements: a network operating system manages client data, resources, ensures authorized user access, manages file access, restricts network access, dictates communication rules, and managaes client applications. Several examples exist (UNIX, LINUX, Microsoft Server 2003 and 2008, MAC OS X Server).
      • Server features relative to clients: more memory, processing, and storage capacity. Equipped with special hardware, allowing network management functions.
      • Disadvantages relative to peer-to-peer networks: complex design and maintenance.
      • Advantages relative to peer-to-peer networks: user credentials assigned from one place; multiple shared resources with centralized access, controls, and monitoring; centralized problem monitoring, diagnostics, and correction capabilities; user response optimization on large networks; efficient processing on large networks; scalability (useful for medium and large scale organizations).
    • LANs, MANs, and WANs
      • LAN: Local area network. Network confined to a relatively small space, common in 1980s as peer-to-peer networks, now larger and more complex as client/server networks.
      • MAN: Metropolitan area network. Network extending beyond building boundaries and larger than LAN. Connects multiple buildings.
      • WAN: Wide area network. Connects geographically distinct LANs or MANs. Contains slightly different transmission methods and media, greater variety of technologies, separate offices in same or different organizations. Figure 1-4 shows a simple WAN.
    • Elements Common to Client/Server Networks (same as before)
    • File/Print Services (same as before).
    • Access Services (same as before)

    Specific Questions and Answers

    • Standalone vs. Networked: A laptop with no internet access on BART is best described as standalone.
    • Client-Server vs. Networking: Logging into a company domain on a work laptop is best classified as a client-server environment
    • Airport network: The network in an airport is a WAN- it connects multiple locations.
    • Remote control of computer: The use of a hotel room computer to remotely control a workplace is an example of an access service (or use of a WAN connection).
    • Network Administrator and Bandwidth: A network administrator examining traffic records to identify high bandwidth usage needs management services.
    • Microsoft Word Copies: Determining the number of Microsoft Word copies in use involves file and print services management.
    • Remote Server Access Amy accessing a company server from a hotel uses access services.
    • Converged Service Type: A converged service encompasses many types of communications into a single network.
    • Cable describing term: The cable connecting a computer to a switch is a medium.
    • Switch describing term: A switch is a connectivity device.
