Neisseria Characteristics
- Gram-negative, diplococcus bacteria
- Kidney or bean-shaped, flattened or concave adjacent shape
- Approximately 0.6 – 1.0 μm in diameter
Neisseria Species
- Neisseria gonorrhoeae (also known as gonococcus)
- Neisseria meningitidis
Neisseria Gonorrhoeae (Gonococcus)
- Causes gonorrhoea, a sexually transmitted disease (STD)
- Produces acids and ferments glucose
- Affects infants, children, and adults
- Attacks mucous membranes in the genitourinary tract, rectum, throat, and eyes
- Transmitted through sexual interactions or from mother to infant during childbirth
- Can cause blindness in infants if left untreated
Preventing Blindness in Infants
- Crede's prophylaxis: 1-2 drops of 1% silver nitrate to prevent gonococcal ophthalmic neonaturum
Gonorrhoea
- Incubation period: 2-8 days
- Male gonorrhoea:
- Spreads to prostate glands and epididymis
- Signs and symptoms: difficulty urinating, yellow purulent discharge, epididymitis, urethritis, and reactive arthritis
- Female gonorrhoea:
- Spreads from paracervical glands to fallopian tubes and peritoneal cavity
- Signs and symptoms: usually asymptomatic, painful urination, abnormal vaginal bleeding, and pain during sex
