Wilm's Tumor
- Wilm's tumor is the most common intra-abdominal and kidney tumor of childhood.
- It is also known as "Nephroblastoma" or "Nephro" meaning kidney tumor.
- It is a malignant tumor in the kidney that can eventually become cancerous.
Stages of Wilm's Tumor
- Stage 1: Tumor is resected without damaging the kidney.
- Stage 2: Tumor extends beyond the kidney but is still resected, with no lymph node involvement.
- Stage 3: Residual tumor is confined to the abdomen with lymph node involvement.
- Stage 4: Tumor metastasizes to lungs, liver, bones, or distant nodules.
- Stage 5: Tumor is present in both kidneys at diagnosis, with bilateral renal involvement.
Therapeutic Management
- Surgery: Nephrectomy
- Radiation Therapy
- Chemotherapy: Actinomycin D, Vincristine
Nursing Management
- Prevent/Avoid Palpation of the abdomen to avoid rupture of the tumor.
- Prepare the child and family for the operation.
- Post-op care: advise to avoid high-risk activities, prevent UTI, and report GU signs and symptoms.
Clinical Manifestations
- Swelling or mass within the abdomen (non-tender, firm, and confined).
- Secondary anemia
- Weight loss
- Hypertension
