    Study Notes

    Natural Killer (NK) Cells

    • Function primarily in innate immunity, exhibiting spontaneous, non-specific cytotoxic activity towards virus-infected cells, tumor cells, and graft cells.
    • Mechanism of NK-mediated cytolysis is similar to Tc cells, but non-specific and MHC-unrestricted.
    • Can interact with and kill IgG-coated cells through a receptor for the Fc portion of IgG, an acquired process.
    • Produce cytokines, including INF-y, TNF alpha, and GM-CSF (Granulocyte-Monocyte Colony Stimulating Factor).
    • IL-2-activated NK cells are called LAK cells (Lymphokine-Activated Natural Killer cells), with enhanced killing efficiency, showing promising results in metastatic cancer therapy.

    Dendritic Cells

    • Named for their long, narrow processes resembling neuronal dendrites.
    • Derived from myeloid stem cells in the bone marrow.

    Mast Cells

    • Granulated cells that release histamine and other inflammatory mediators into the blood.
    • Found in connective tissues, specifically in the skin and airways.
    • Involved in hypersensitivity reactions.
