    Study Notes

    Natural Gas Leak Operations

    • All personnel must comply with this guideline when operating on a gas leak incident.
    • This guideline applies to all members of Spring Fire Department and Harris County ESD No. 7.
    • Immediately upon arrival at a suspected gas leak, conduct air monitoring and wear SCBA.
    • Establish a hot zone, warm zone, and cold zone around any gas leak, with a hot zone being defined as any area with a gas accumulation of 10% LEL or greater.
    • Evacuate all civilians from the hazardous area.
    • When the gas company arrives on scene, they will assume responsibility for controlling the leak.
    • Never attempt to switch gas-powered equipment back into service, including extinguished pilot lights.
    • SFD personnel will not clamp gas lines.
    • In the event a gas line is cut, immediately begin air monitoring to determine the area affected and the potential hazards to life and property.
    • Do not place soil on top of a cut gas line as this can facilitate the underground travel of gas.
    • When an underground gas line is leaking, the area should be continually monitored, especially cracks in dry soil, allowing gas to travel large distances through fissures.
    • When a gas leak involves possible road closures, request law enforcement for traffic control.
    • All entries into buildings with suspected gas leaks should involve the minimum number of personnel necessary to size up the situation and provide continuous air monitoring.
    • Any readings on gas monitors inside a building should trigger an immediate evacuation of the building.
    • Potential ignition sources, such as electrical service, should be controlled/isolated from a safe distance if the leak cannot be immediately controlled.
    • Buildings with gas accumulation should be ventilated using natural ventilation.
    • Positive pressure ventilation can be used assisting with ventilation, however, it should be operated in a monitored and safe location.

    Responsibilities

    • Spring Fire Department maintains command of all uncontrolled natural gas leaks within its territory.
    • The Incident Commander should consider deploying a charged hose line based on ignition hazards.
    • Only the minimally required number of personnel should enter the hot zone in order to size up the situation, determine the source of the leak, and isolate the leak if possible.
