- A nutritional monitoring is an assessment of dietary or nutritional status conducted at intermittent times.
- The aim is to detect changes in the dietary or nutritional status of a population.
- Data is generated in five general areas: nutritional and health status measurements, food consumption measurements, food composition measurement and nutrient data banks, dietary knowledge, behavior, attitude assessments, and food supply and demand.

- Nutrition monitoring started with the US Dept Agriculture (USDA).
- Country data includes food availability (AKA disappearance or per capita availability) data, during the late 1800s and early 1900s.
