Introduction to Bibliographic Control
- Bibliographic Control (BC) is about all activities involved in creating, organizing, managing, and maintaining files of bibliographic records representing items held in a library, archival collection, or sources listed in an index or database.
- It facilitates access to information contained in them.
Levels of Bibliographic Control
- There are two levels: Universal Bibliographic Control (UBC) and National Bibliographic Control (NBC)
- Universal Bibliographic Control (UBC) is a cooperation that combines efforts in bibliographic information at the national level of countries to create an international network system.
- National Bibliographic Control (NBC) aims to list information sources in a systematic manner to enable awareness of available information and its location.
National Bibliographic Control (NBC)
- Involves standardization of bibliographic description and subject access by means of uniform catalog code, classification systems, name authorities, and preferred headings.
- Includes creation and maintenance of catalogs, union lists, and finding aids.
