Becoming a national artist

  • Several awards are given to recognize artists, including The Order of National Artist.

Organizational Structure of the NCCA

  • The National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) operates through the Board of Commissioners.
  • A National Advisory Board (NAB) is formed by the heads of 19 National Committees (NCs).
  • The 19 NCs are divided between: Subcommission on the Arts (SCA), Subcommission on Cultural Heritage (SCH), Subcommission on Cultural Dissemination (SCD), and Subcommission on Cultural Communities and Traditional Arts (SCCTA).
  • SCA contains Architecture & Allied Arts, Cinema, Dance, Dramatic Arts, Literary Arts, Music, and Visual Arts committees.
  • SCH contains Archives, Art Galleries, Historical Research, Libraries and Info Services, Monuments & Sites, and Museums committees.
  • SCD contains Communication, Cultural Education, and Language and Translation committees.

The Commission and the Chairperson

  • The Commission adheres to Section 9 of RA No. 7356.
  • The Office of the Chairperson commission includes a Secretary, NEFCA/Office of the Comptroller, the Legal Service, and the International Affairs Office.

National Living Treasures

  • It refers to traditional artists.
  • Must be an inhabitant of an indigenous/traditional cultural community anywhere in the Philippines.
  • Must have been engaged in a folk art tradition for at least 50 years.
  • Must have consistently performed or produced over a significant period.
  • Must have passed on and/or will pass on to other community members.
  • Must possess a mastery of tools and materials.
  • A traditional artist who possesses all the qualities of a Manlilikha ng Bayan candidate, but due to age or infirmity, can still be recognized if:
  • The community has recognized them as a master and teacher of their craft.
  • They have passed on community skills on to other members.
  • They have created a significant body of work and/or has consistently displayed excellence.
  • They have been instrumental in the revitalization their community's artistic tradition.
  • Awardees receive: a specially designed gold medallion, initial grant of P100,000, monthly stipend of P10,000 for life.
  • Republic Act No. 7355 states that the NCCA board approved an additional monthly personal allowance of P14,000.
  • A maximum cumulative amount of P750,000 for medical and hospital benefits annually, similar to other National Artists.
