Study Notes
Skeletal System Overview
- The skeleton consists of 206 bones that provide support, protection, and movement for the body.
- At birth, the human skeleton has around 300 bones, which fuse together as we grow and develop.
Axial Skeleton
- The axial skeleton consists of the skull, vertebrae, ribs, and sternum.
- The lumbar region of the spine forms the lower back.
- The first seven ribs are called true ribs.
- The coccyx is formed by 3-5 fused vertebrae.
Vertebral Column
- The atlas is the first bone of the cervical spine.
- The sacrum connects the spinal column to the pelvic girdle.
Functions of the Skeleton
- The skeleton provides support, protection, movement, and blood cell production.
- The exoskeleton is the term for the skeleton that is on the outside of the organism.
- The skeleton does not produce hormones.
Connective Tissues
- Ligaments connect bones to each other and provide stability to joints.
- Synovial fluid in joints reduces friction and allows for smooth movement.
- Ball-and-socket joints allow movement in all planes.
Bone Structure and Function
- Tendons connect muscles to bones and facilitate movement.
- The growth plate is responsible for bone growth and development.
- The periosteum is a layer of tissue that covers the bone and allows for bone growth and repair.
- Compact bone is composed of tightly packed osteons.
- Cartilage is composed primarily of collagen and chondroitin sulfate.
Joint Disorders
- Arthritis is caused by inflammation of the joints.
