    Study Notes

Muscles that Depress the Scapula and Clavicle

    • Lower Serratus anterior, Pectoralis minor, Lower pectoralis major, Subclavius, Lower latissimus dorsi, and Lower trapezius are the primary muscles involved in depressing the scapula and clavicle.

    Lower Serratus Anterior

    • Originates from ribs 6-8 on the anterolateral side.
    • Inserts at the inferior angle of the scapula.
    • Innervated by the long thoracic nerve.

    Pectoralis Minor

    • Originates from ribs 3-5 on the anterior side.
    • Inserts on the coracoid process of the scapula.
    • Innervated by the medial pectoral nerve.

    Lower Pectoralis Major

    • Originates from the lower half of the sternum and costal cartilages of ribs 4-6.
    • Inserts at the lateral lip of the intertubercular groove.
    • Innervated by the medial pectoral nerve.

    Subclavius

    • Originates from the costal cartilage of the first rib.
    • Inserts on the underside of the middle portion of the clavicle.
    • Innervated by the nerve to subclavius.

    Lower Latissimus Dorsi

    • Originates from the spinous processes of vertebrae L1-L5, sacrum, and iliac crest.
    • Inserts at the intertubercular groove.
    • Innervated by the thoracodorsal nerve.

    Lower Trapezius

    • Originates from the spinous processes of vertebrae T7-T12.
    • Inserts at the medial one-third of the scapula.
    • Innervated by the cranial nerve XI, the spinal accessory nerve.
