Study Notes
Suboccipital Muscles
- Last group of back muscles, connecting the head with the spine.
- Originate from various vertebrae, specifically from L5 to C2 (axis).
- Form the suboccipital triangle:
- Medial boundary: Rectus capitis posterior major
- Lateral boundary: Obliquus capitis superior
- Inferior boundary: Obliquus capitis inferior
- Rectus capitis posterior minor does not form part of the suboccipital triangle.
- Deep muscles involved in head movement.
Rotatores
- Comprised of three subgroups located along different vertebral regions:
- Rotatores lumborum: Originate from transverse processes of lumbar vertebrae, inserting at spinous processes.
- Rotatores thoracis: Originate from thoracic transverse processes, inserting at thoracic spinous processes.
- Rotatores cervicis: Originate from cervical articular processes, inserting at cervical spinous processes.
- Innervated by posterior rami of spinal nerves.
Pectoral Region Muscles
-
Pectoralis Major:
- Origin: Medial half of clavicle, anterior surface of sternum, first seven costal cartilages.
- Insertion: Lateral lip of the intertubercular sulcus of the humerus.
- Function: Adduction, medial rotation, and flexion of the shoulder.
-
Subclavius:
- Origin: Rib 1 at junction with costal cartilage.
- Insertion: Groove on the inferior surface of the middle third of the clavicle.
- Function: Stabilizes the sternoclavicular joint and depresses shoulder tip.
-
Pectoralis Minor:
- Origin: Anterior surfaces of ribs III-V.
- Insertion: Coracoid process of scapula.
- Function: Depresses and protracts the shoulder.
Diaphragm
- Musculotendinous partition between thoracic and abdominal cavities.
- Chief muscle of inspiration, descends during inhalation.
- Each dome is convex superiorly; typically, the right dome is higher than the left.
Perineal Anatomy
- Urogenital triangle divided into superficial and deep perineal spaces.
- External anal sphincter: Provides support and control over the anus.
- Important during childbirth as perineal tissues may be injured.
Pelvic Floor Muscles
- Weakening of pelvic muscles can lead to urinary stress incontinence and organ prolapse.
- Commonly torn muscles: pubococcygeus and puborectalis.
General Functions of Muscles
- Assists in actions that increase abdominal pressure including childbirth, urination, and defecation.
- Plays a role in respiration through diaphragm contraction and relaxation.
Miscellaneous
- The contraction of abdominal muscles supports internal organs against gravitational effects, particularly in maintaining posture.
