Extrinsic Muscles of the Thoracic Limb (Small Animal) Quiz

Deep pectoral. Pull trunk cranially and extend shoulder (when in supporting position) or draw limb caudally and flex shoulder (when not supporting weight).

Pars cervicalis (of cleidocephalicus). Advance limb, extend shoulder, draw head and neck to the side.

Mastoid part (of sternocephalicus). Draw head and neck to the side.

Sternothyroideus. Pull tongue and larynx caudally.

Cleidocephalicus (of brachiocephalicus). Advance limb, extend shoulder, draw neck and head to the side.

Occipital part (of sternocephalicus). Draw head and neck to the side.

Rhomboideus capitis. Elevate forelimb and draw the scapula against the trunk.

Omotransversarius. Advance limb or flex the neck laterally.

Cervical part (of trapezius). Elevate and abduct forelimb.

Rhomboideus cervicis. Elevate forelimb and draw the scapula against the trunk.

Descending (superficial) pectoral. Adduct limb (when not weight bearing) or prevent limb abduction (when weight bearing).

Thoracic part (of trapezius). Elevate and abduct forelimb.

Serratus ventralis cervicis. Support trunk and depress scapula.

Cleidobrachialis (of brachiocephalicus). Advance limb, extend shoulder, draw neck and head to the side.

Transverse (superficial) pectoral. Adduct limb (when not weight bearing) or prevent limb abduction (when weight bearing).

Latissimus dorsi. Flex shoulder and draw the free limb caudally (as in digging)

Rhomboideus thoracis. Elevate forelimb and draw the scapula against the trunk.

Serratus ventralis thoracis. Support trunk and depress scapula.

Sternohyoideus. Pull tongue and larynx caudally.

Pars mastoidea (of cleidocephalicus). Advance limb, extend shoulder, draw head and neck to the side.
