Flashcards

Motor Trolley Block Section Notification

The person in charge of a motor trolley informs the station master when they will enter and clear a block section.

Motor Trolley Authorization Process

The station master receives the notification, confirms the line is clear with the other station master, and then gives the 'official-in-charge' the authority to proceed, recording everything in the Train Signal Register.

Motor Trolley Block Section Responsibility

The person in charge of a motor trolley is responsible for clearing the block section within the specified time.

Out-of-Station Motor Trolley Procedure

A written memo is sent to the station master to request line clearance outside of station limits, indicating time needed for clearing the block section.

Study Notes

Motor Trolley Operation Procedures

  • Block Section Procedures: The official-in-charge must notify the Station Master of the block section and time the motor trolley will enter. The Station Master then confirms line clearance with the other end Station Master, granting authority to proceed. Both Station Masters record the motor trolley's details (number as train number) in the Train Signal Register using red ink. The official-in-charge is responsible for clearing the block by the set time.

  • Placing Motor Trolley Outside Station Limits: A memo (duplicate) requesting line clearance is sent to the nearest Station Master, specifying the required clearing time. The receiving Station Master obtains clearance from the other end and provides the authority to proceed, along with the memo duplicate. The official in charge only places the motor trolley on the line after receiving authority and the duplicate memo.

Motor Trolley Signal Operation

  • Fixed Signals: The motor trolley's in-charge must obey all fixed signals. A railway officer may, under daylight and good visibility conditions, pass reception signals set to "on" after waiting 10 minutes. However, proceeding with special caution remains crucial, as short stops are necessary for potential roadblocks, wrong points or placement at the outer facing points. The motor trolley must await further signal confirmation from the station master before entering the station.

  • Spring-Loaded Points: Motor trolleys cannot traverse spring-loaded points due to their light weight, potentially derailing if they pass through these points. To avoid this: The Station Master, before granting line-clearance, advises the other end Station Master about the existence of spring-loaded points (location). Station Masters issuing motor trolley's caution notices about spring loaded points at their respective ends (location). The motor trolley driver must lift the trolley off the track and place it on the correct line after stopping short of the points.

  • Crossing Trains: Motor trolleys can be moved to a non-running line or an occupied running line in order to facilitate crossing trains. It does not count as a crossing train for station capacity calculations.

Motor Trolley Breakdown and Special Cases

  • Breakdown: If a motor trolley breaks down and cannot be hand-propelled, the official-in-charge must remove it from the track immediately. To replace a disabled motor trolley, the procedures outlined in the document must be followed.

  • Single and Double Line Sections, Token Section, Tokenless Section: For specific procedures on how motor trolley operates as a train, including following other trains in single-line token or tokenless and, double-line sections, refer to relevant paragraphs. These procedures (and related document numbers) are specified for each operational condition (e.g., single line token, tokenless section, double line).
