What is Motivation?
- Motivation is a force that energizes, activates, and directs behavior.
Theories of Motivation
- Instinct Theory: All creatures are born with specific innate knowledge about how to survive, such as spinning webs, building nests, avoiding danger, and reproducing.
- Drive Reduction Theory: Humans have internal biological needs (drives) that motivate us to perform certain behaviors to reduce internal states of arousal or tension, such as eating to reduce hunger.
- Humanistic Theory: Humans are driven to achieve their maximum potential, but obstacles like hunger, thirst, financial problems, and safety issues can hinder this growth, as described by Abraham Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs.
Emotions
- Emotions are complex states of feeling that result in physical and psychological changes that influence thought and behavior.
- Emotionality is associated with psychological phenomena including temperament, personality, mood, and motivation.
- Emotions involve physiological arousal, expressive behaviors, and conscious experience.
Theories of Emotions
- Alexithymia: Some individuals have difficulty expressing their emotions and understanding those of others, often describing emotional feelings in terms of physical symptoms like headaches, gas, or glow.
