    Study Notes

    Montgomery County Radio System

    • The county operates a 22-site, 20-channel digital trunked 800 MHz radio system shared by County users, municipal police departments, and the National Institute of Standards and Technology.
    • The system is designed as a Simulcast System, transmitting and receiving simultaneously from all 22 radio sites, providing in-building system coverage.
    • The 20 radio channels provide up to 36 voice paths for communication, with one channel used as the control channel to coordinate network traffic.

    Zone Configuration

    • The radio system has multiple zones, each with its own set of channels:
      • Zone 1-6: MCFRS FG (7A-7F)
      • Zone 7: 7G Admin FG, 7H Hosp S FG, BATT TRN, I IMT Secure, J Public Safty, L GOVT EMG
      • Zone 8: 7P MC LE Rx, 73 VHF & VRS
      • Zone 71-73: N NIST, 7P MC LE Rx, 73 VHF & VRS

    Radio Failure Procedures

    • In the event of total 800 MHz system failure:
      • APX-7000XE radios and mobiles: switch to zone 7V1 VHF OPS R or 7V2 VHF DISP R
      • APX-6000XE radios: switch to zone “MA: 800 IO” and then to 8TAC91

    Sonim Phone Procedures

    • In the event of radio failure, use the MCFRS Sonim phones assigned to the apparatus:
      • Touch the “ZelloWork” icon, go to the “CHANNELS” tab, and turn on “*7A-DISP”
      • Use either the touch screen “PTT” or the large “PTT” button on the side of the phone

    U Zone Procedures

    • If the Sonim phone fails to work, switch to the “U” zone, which works on all MCFRS portable radios.

    MAYDAY Procedures

    • In the event of a MAYDAY emergency, the unit in question will say MAYDAY three times, give their unit number, and then a L.U.N.A.R.
    • Mayday Ops will remain on the original incident talk group.

    Fairfax County Procedures

    • In the event of an emergency in Fairfax County, transmit the following: “FIRE ALARM TO MONTGOMERY COUNTY PE‐717, CHECK YOUR DISPLAY.”
    • If no response, Police and additional Fire/Rescue Support will be sent to assist.
