    Study Notes

    Minor Connectors

    • Definition: The connecting link between the major connector or base of a partial removable dental prostheses and other units of the prostheses, such as the clasp assembly, indirect retainers, occlusal rests, or cingulum rests.
    • Examples: The rest at each end of a linguoplate is the terminus of a minor connector; parts of the denture framework that retain the denture bases are also minor connectors.

    Form and Location

    • Should have sufficient but not excessive bulk to be rigid.
    • When contacting the axial surface of an abutment, it should not be placed on convex surfaces, but in an embrasure to be less noticeable to the tongue.
    • Should pass vertically from the major connector to minimize gingival coverage.
    • The deepest part of the embrasure should be blocked out to prevent interference during insertion and removal and to prevent the wedging effect on the contacted teeth.
    • On each side of an embrasure, it should be tapered to the teeth to avoid excessive bulk and sharp angles, and to eliminate spaces that trap food.
    • Those that contact the guiding plane surface are either as a connected part of a direct retainer assembly or as a separate entity.
    • If it gives rise to a clasp arm, the connector should be tapered to the tooth below the origin of the clasp; otherwise, it should be tapered to a knife edge.
    • If an artificial tooth is set against a proximal plate, the largest bulk of the connector should be to the lingual side, allowing a better contact of the artificial teeth with the abutment and displaying less metal between them.
    • The portions of the denture framework that attach the acrylic resin denture base are minor connectors, which can be Ladder or open lattice work designs or mesh patterns, completely embedded within the denture base.
    • In mandibular distal extension bases, the minor connector should extend to two-thirds of the length of the ridge and have elements on both the buccal and lingual sides to provide strength and minimize distortion of the cured resin base during processing.
    • In maxillary distal extension bases, the minor connector must extend the full length of the residual ridge.

    Tissue Stops

    • Definition: Parts of the minor connectors designed for the retention of the resin bases, providing stability to the frame during processing and preventing distortion of the framework during processing.

    Finish Lines

    • Definition: A line of demarcation determined by two points, in PRDP framework, it is the junction between the major connector and minor connector.
    • Mandibular: The junction between the major connector and the mandibular minor connector should be a strong butt-type joint, with an angle not more than 90 degrees, to ensure better mechanical connection between the resin denture base and the major connector.
    • Maxillary: The junction between the major connector and the maxillary minor connector should be a strong butt-type joint, with an angle not more than 90 degrees, to ensure better mechanical connection between the resin denture base and the major connector.
    • The palatal finish line should be located 2 mm medial from an imaginary line contacting the lingual surfaces of the missing posterior teeth.
    • The finish line should not be located too medially to avoid altering the natural contour of the palate, and should not be placed too far buccally to avoid interfering with the setting of the artificial teeth.
