Metaplasia Definition
- A reversible change in which one adult cell type is replaced by another adult cell type
Examples of Metaplasia
- Squamous metaplasia in the respiratory tract of smokers
- Normal ciliated columnar epithelium is replaced by stratified squamous epithelium
- Barrett's esophagus
- The normal squamous epithelium of the lower esophagus is replaced by columnar epithelium
Causes of Metaplasia
