Questions and Answers

What is Fibrinoid necrosis?

It is a type of necrosis characterized by a circumferential bright pink area caused by immune reactions where antigen-antibody complexes deposit in blood vessel walls.

Fibrinoid necrosis usually occurs in __________.

immune reactions

    Study Notes

    Fibrinoid Necrosis

    • Characterized by pink fibrinous material
    • Occurs in immune reactions where antigen-antibody complexes deposit in blood vessel walls
    • Can also occur in severe hypertension
    • Inflammation/vasculitis (neutrophils) are often present

    Endocervical Squamous Metaplasia

    • Normal cervix has a smooth, glistening mucosal surface with a small rim of vaginal cuff
    • Cervical os is small and round in nulliparous women
    • The os has a fish-mouth shape after pregnancies
    • Normal cervix has a non-keratinized squamous epithelium on the outside and columnar epithelium on the inside
    • Squamous metaplasia occurs when there is irritation
    • The histological image shows normal endocervical epithelium and metaplastic squamous epithelium
    • If the entire metaplastic cell development results in dysplasia, it becomes Carcinoma in-situ
    • Cells are typical and not atypical because it is only metaplasia, not dysplasia

    Acute Cholecystitis

    • Acute inflammation of the gallbladder
    • Gross features include:
      • Congestion
      • Redness
      • Wall thickness
