    Acute Otitis Media

    • Inflammation of the ear, most prevalent disease among children after RTI
    • Occurs most often in children 6-36 months and 4-6 years old
    • Higher incidence in males and children with cleft palate
    • Caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, and Group A beta hemolytic streptococci
    • Signs and symptoms: fever, sharp or constant pain in one or both ears, irritable
    • Nursing management:
      • Administer oxygen and antibiotics as ordered
      • Monitor intake and output closely, obtain daily weight
      • Encourage mother to breastfeed

    Bacterial Meningitis

    • Infection of the meninges, occurring most often in children under 24 months
    • Caused by Neisseria meningitidis, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Group B streptococcus, and Escherichia coli
    • Signs and symptoms: very irritable, headache, seizures or shock, bulging fontanels
    • Nursing management:
