Study Notes
Erectile Dysfunction
- Diagnosis requires experiencing 75-100% of the time difficulty with erections for at least 6 months, alongside significant distress.
- This impacts self-esteem, relationships, and overall quality of life.
Gender Dysphoria
- Euphoria represents happiness and satisfaction, whereas Dysphoria is characterized by unhappiness and dissatisfaction.
- Mismatch between gender identity and assigned sex at birth.
- Previously known as Gender Identity Disorder, this terminology has been altered to remove stigma.
- Gender dysphoria isn't the same as gender nonconformity; gender nonconformity doesn't always cause distress.
Schizophrenia
- Life expectancy is shortened by an average of 20-28 years compared to the general population.
- Diagnosis relies on observations of behavior, reported experiences, and accounts of those familiar with the individual.
- Genetic predisposition (70-80%) plays a significant role. Environmental factors, such as oxygen deprivation or infection during pregnancy, maternal stress, malnutrition, and childhood trauma (bullying, abuse, loss of a loved one, upbringing in urban environments) can also influence development.
Antisocial Personality Disorder (ASPD)
- Characterized by a strongly self-centered attitude, difficulty conforming to societal norms, and a lack of remorse after harming others.
- Problems with interpersonal relationships are prevalent.
- Antisocial personality disorder affects approximately 1-3% of the population.
- ASPD is linked with a higher risk of criminal and illegal activities, substance abuse, and a sense of superiority.
Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD)
- A lifelong condition, symptoms may diminish with age after appropriate treatment.
- Often characterized by intense emotions and unstable sense of self, leading to intense anger if a felt need is unmet.
- Associated with a higher risk (10%) for suicide.
Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
- Three main presentation types: Predominantly inattentive, Predominantly hyperactive-impulsive, and Combined presentation.
- Symptoms may lessen in severity over time, from childhood to adulthood.
- Associated with symptoms like inattention, hyperactivity, impulsivity, emotional dysregulation, impaired self-regulation in various areas (e.g., time management).
- Symptoms can include poor handwriting, constant mental activity, restlessness, difficulty remaining seated or still.
Causes and Complications of Schizophrenia
- Genetic factors contribute to a large degree, around 70-80%.
- Environmental factors, such as oxygen deprivation or infection in the womb, maternal stress, malnutrition, and childhood trauma, are also implicated.
- Complications may include harm to self or others, issues with social isolation, and related health problems.
