    Study Notes

    Lecture 8: Medicinal Plants

    •  Lecture 8 covers the anatomy, dusting powders, taxonomy, physiology, and introduction to pharmacognosy of medicinal plants.
    •  Lectures 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7 cover anatomy.
    •  Lecture 8 covers dusting powders.
    •  A separate lecture covers taxonomy.
    •  Physiology is covered in a separate lecture (Lecture 6).
    •  Introduction to pharmacognosy.

    Taxonomy

    • Taxonomy is the science of describing, naming, and classifying organisms.
    • Organisms are grouped based on similarities.
    • Scientific names are crucial because common names can vary across regions.
    • Latin is the language for scientific classification.
    • The hierarchical classification system includes Kingdom, Phylum/Division, Class, Order, Family, Genus, and Species. A mnemonic device is provided, "King Philip Called Out For Good Soup" (KPCOFGS).

    Scientific Binomial System

    •  A two-part naming system (binomial) is used for scientific names.
    • The first part is the genus name (always capitalized).
    • The second part is the species name (never capitalized).
    • Both the genus and species names are italicized in print or underlined if handwritten.
    • Example: Ocimum africanum (Genus: Ocimum, Species: africanum).

    Family Classification

    • A table showing old and new family names is given.
    • Labiatae is now known as Lamiaceae.
    • Examples of families and their common names are listed: Asteraceae (Sunflower family), Apiaceae (Carrot family), Brassicaceae (Mustard family), Lamiaceae (Mint family), Poaceae (Grass family), and Fabaceae (Bean family).

    Scientific Classification of Syzygium aromaticum

    •  Kingdom: Plantae
    •  Clade: Tracheophytes
    •  Clade: Angiosperms
    •  Clade: Eudicots
    •  Clade: Rosids
    •  Order: Myrtales
    •  Family: Myrtaceae
    •  Genus: Syzygium
    •  Species: aromaticum (Author: L.)
    •  Synonyms are given for the species

    Digitalis purpurea and Digitalis lanata

    •  Digitalis purpurea and Digitalis lanata are examples of plants.
    •  These plants belong to the genus Digitalis

    Identification of Mentha pipperita

    •  The dried leaves of Mentha pipperita belong to the Lamiaceae family.
    • Mentha pipperita is a plant species.

    Species Names

    •  Species names may refer to morphological characteristics, geographical origins, or special indications (e.g., Piper nigrum, Olea europeae, Cannabis indica, Quillaia saponaria).

    Plant Classifications

    •  Two-kingdom classification (Linnaeus, 1758): Animalia and Plantae
    •  A five-kingdom system (Whittaker, 1970–1980): Animalia, Plantae, Fungi, Protista, and Monera.

    Plant Kingdom

    •  A branching diagram outlining different plant groupings based on characteristics, including those producing seeds.

    Angiosperms and Gymnosperms

    •  Angiosperms (flowering plants) have true flowers or reduced flowers; stems composed of tissues. The ovules and seeds are covered.
    •  Gymnosperms produce flower-like structures called cones; ovules and seeds are not covered.

    Plant Families

    •  Examples of Monocot families: Gramineae (Poaceae), Zingiberaceae, Liliaceae
    •  Examples of Dicot families (Umbelliferae (Apiaceae), Solanaceae, Compositae (Asteraceae), Leguminosae (Fabaceae), Lamiaceae

Specific Illustrations of Families and Plants

    • Examples of different plants and their families, like Ocimum africanum is part of the Family Lamiaceae.
    • Specific examples of monocots and dicots: maize plant and mentha plant.

    Quizzes, and Question Items

    • A three-part quiz on plant types.
    • Part I: Monocot or Dicot Determination
    • Part II: Description on Stomata
    • Part III: Plant Taxonomy
