Media Types and Convergence

Types of Media

• There are three main types of media: print media, broadcast media, and media convergence.

• Print Media:

  • Paper and ink are reproduced in a printing process that is traditionally mechanical.
  • Text media involves conveying ideas through simple and flexible formats, whether handwritten or printed.
  • Typography is defined as the art and technique of arranging the visual component of the written word.
  • Visual media uses pictures, photos, images, and graphics to channel communication through sight.
  • Graphic design is the process of visually organizing and presenting information developed through creative processes.
  • Informational graphics (infographics) are visual representations of information designed to easily understand high-volume or complex data. Examples include graphs and charts.
  • Cartoons are sketches or drawings intended as satire, caricature, or humor, such as comic strips and editorial cartoons.
  • Photography involves capturing images on a light-sensitive surface, usually photographic film.

• Broadcast Media:

  • Broadcast media reaches target audiences using airwaves as the transmission medium.
  • Audio media uses audio or voice recordings to deliver information.
  • Multimedia integrates text, graphics, drawings, still and moving images (video), animation, and audio, where every type of information can be stored, communicated, and handled digitally.
  • "Rich media" was used in advertising with a similar concept to early multimedia.
  • "Hypermedia" extends multimedia by linking photos or graphics to other sources of information.
  • New media integrates emerging technologies on a digital platform for organizing and distributing content, including podcasts, augmented reality, video games, blogs, and wikis.
  • New media allows dissemination of information to a theoretically infinite number of receivers and offers customized ways of communication based on specified categories.

• Media Convergence:

  • Media convergence is also known as technological convergence.
  • Media convergence involves the synergy of communication, computing, and content in the digital world.

• "Picture Perfect" Instructions:

  • Groups need an illustration board to write on.
  • Pictures of different types of media will be shown for the groups to guess.
