Massage Lubricants

• Petroleum-based massage lotions can dry out skin, deplete nutrients, and clog pores
• Massage creams stimulate, soothe, warm, cool, or provide special nutrients to the area being massaged
• For clients with oily skin or oil intolerance, cornstarch may be preferred as a massage lubricant
• A patch test should be performed on the inner bend of the elbow and checked for signs of itching, inflammation, and sensitivity 15-30 minutes after application
• If a reaction occurs, the lubricant should be immediately removed with soap and water
• Hypoallergenic products are safe for most people with sensitivities

Massage Room Environment

• Important factors for client comfort include adequate heat, ventilation, and indirect lighting
• A massage business has three areas: massage area, business area, and bathroom/hydrotherapy area
• A massage room should be at least 10 feet wide and 12 feet long
• Indirect lighting is the preferred lighting choice for the treatment area

Massage Equipment

• The main piece of equipment for a massage therapist is the massage table
• To determine the optimal height of the massage table, consider the massage style, practitioner height, client size, and practitioner preferences
• A massage table requiring arm support for larger clients should be at least 27 inches wide
• A non-portable massage table should be around 76 inches long
• High-density foam on the massage table should be 1-2 inches thick
• High-quality vinyl should be regularly cleaned with water and a mild detergent

Client Preparation

• A face cradle is a useful piece of equipment when a client is lying face down
• Clean linens should be used for every client
• A minimum of 1 and 1 ½ weeks' worth of clean linens should be stocked if they are cleaned weekly
