Massage Lubricants
- Petroleum-based massage lotions can dry out skin, deplete nutrients, and clog pores
- Massage creams stimulate, soothe, warm, cool, or provide special nutrients to the area being massaged
- For clients with oily skin or oil intolerance, cornstarch may be preferred as a massage lubricant
- A patch test should be performed on the inner bend of the elbow and checked for signs of itching, inflammation, and sensitivity 15-30 minutes after application
- If a reaction occurs, the lubricant should be immediately removed with soap and water
- Hypoallergenic products are safe for most people with sensitivities
Massage Room Environment
- Important factors for client comfort include adequate heat, ventilation, and indirect lighting
- A massage business has three areas: massage area, business area, and bathroom/hydrotherapy area
- A massage room should be at least 10 feet wide and 12 feet long
- Indirect lighting is the preferred lighting choice for the treatment area
