Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs
- Basic needs consist of physiological and safety needs.
Physiological Needs
- Most basic needs in Maslow's hierarchy
- Essential for physical survival
- Examples: air, food, drink, shelter, clothing, warmth, sleep, and health
- If not met, the body cannot function properly
- Motivation comes from instinct to survive
Safety Needs
- Need for a safe and secure environment
- Desire for order, predictability, and control
- Examples: emotional security, financial security, law and order, health and freedom from fear
- Examples of actions motivated by safety needs: finding a job, obtaining health insurance, healthcare, and moving to a safer neighborhood
- If not met, the individual feels fear and anxiety
Love and Belonging (Social) Needs
- Need to feel a sense of belonging and acceptance
- Includes feeling loved and feeling love towards others
- Motivated by natural instinct to interact
- Involves romantic relationships, connections to family and friends, and belonging to a social group
- If not met, the individual feels lonely and depressed
Esteem Needs
- Need for appreciation and respect
- Includes self-esteem, personal worth, and feeling valued by others
- Two categories: self-esteem (feeling confident and good about oneself) and respect (feeling valued by others)
- If not met, the individual may feel unimportant, less confident, and develop a feeling of inferiority
Self-Actualization Needs
- Need to achieve full potential as human beings
- Self-actualizing people are self-aware, concerned with personal growth, and less concerned with others' opinions
- Can only be met once all other needs are satisfied
- Examples: personal growth, fulfilling potential, and achieving one's goals
Types of Needs
- Deficiency needs: physiological, security, social, and esteem needs (arise due to deprivation)
- Growth needs: self-actualization needs (stem from a desire to grow as a person)
Criticisms of Maslow's Theory
- Needs may not follow a hierarchical sequence
- Theory is difficult to test, especially self-actualization needs
