Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs
- Basic needs consist of physiological and safety needs.
Physiological Needs
- Most basic needs in Maslow's hierarchy

- If not met, the body cannot function properly
- Motivation comes from instinct to survive
Safety Needs
- Need for a safe and secure environment
- Desire for order, predictability, and control
- Examples: emotional security, financial security, law and order, health and freedom from fear
- Examples of actions motivated by safety needs: finding a job, obtaining health insurance, healthcare, and moving to a safer neighborhood
- If not met, the individual feels fear and anxiety
Love and Belonging (Social) Needs
- Need to feel a sense of belonging and acceptance
- Includes feeling loved and feeling love towards others
- Motivated by natural instinct to interact
- Involves romantic relationships, connections to family and friends, and belonging to a social group

Esteem Needs
