    Study Notes

    Mandibular Nerve

    • The mandibular nerve (CN V3) is the largest and inferior division of the trigeminal nerve.
    • It is formed by the union of sensory fibers from the sensory ganglion and the motor root of CN V in the foramen ovale in the greater wing of the sphenoid.
    • The trunk of CN V3 emerges from the cranium to enter the infratemporal fossa.

    Branches of the Mandibular Nerve

    • The mandibular nerve supplies the dura mater and the mucous lining of the mastoid air cells.
    • It has a branch to the medial pterygoid muscle, which also supplies the tensor tympani and tensor veli palatini muscles.

Anterior Division of the Mandibular Nerve

    • The anterior division has the following branches:
      • Masseteric nerve to the masseter muscle and TMJ.
      • Deep temporal nerves to the temporalis muscle and TMJ.

Posterior Division of the Mandibular Nerve

    • The branches of the posterior division are mainly sensory, except for the nerve to the mylohyoid muscle.

Terminal Branches of the Mandibular Nerve

    • The mandibular nerve ends on the face by dividing into several branches:
      • Inferior palpebral branch (to conjunctiva, and skin of lower eyelid).
      • Nasal branch (to skin of nose).
