Male Reproductive System Components
- Epididymis: A coiled structure located on the back of each testis where sperm mature and are stored.
- Testis: The male gonads that produce sperm and testosterone; typically paired and located in the scrotum.
- Scrotum: A pouch of skin that contains and protects the testis; helps regulate temperature for optimal sperm production.
- Penis: The external reproductive organ used for sexual intercourse and to expel urine; contains erectile tissue.
- Urethra: A tube that carries urine from the bladder and semen from the reproductive system out of the body through the penis.
- Vas Deferens: A muscular tube that transports sperm from the epididymis to the ejaculatory duct; part of the spermatic cord.
- Urinary Bladder: A muscular sac that stores urine before it is expelled from the body; plays a role in the urinary system.
- Bulbourethral Gland: Also known as Cowper's glands; small glands that produce a pre-ejaculate fluid that lubricates the urethra.
- Rectum: The final section of the large intestine, where waste material is stored before being excreted; relatively close to male reproductive structures.
- Prostate Gland: A gland that produces seminal fluid which nourishes and transports sperm; surrounds the urethra just below the bladder.
- Seminal Vesicle: Glands that secrete a significant portion of the fluid that becomes semen; located behind the bladder and contribute to sperm mobility.
- Pubic Bone: Part of the hip bone structure; provides support for the lower abdomen and forms the base for the reproductive structures.
