    Study Notes

    Male Reproductive System

    • Glans: the head and tip of the penis
    • Penis Body: the external organ
    • Scrotum: skin that protects the testicles and is temperature-sensitive
    • Testes: responsible for producing sperm and testosterone
    • Epididymis: stores sperm for 2-4 days after production, has a J-shaped coiled tube
    • Vas Deferens: sperm duct that receives sperm from the epididymis
    • Seminal Vesicle: produces ejaculatory fluids ("semen")
    • Prostate Gland: secretes extra fluid to nourish sperm, helps push semen through the urethra
    • Ejaculatory Ducts: tubes lined with muscles that contract to push semen out of the urethra
    • Ejaculate: 2-5ml, sperm comprises 1-5%
    • Bulbourethral Gland (Cowper's Gland): contributes fluid to neutralize residual acidic urine
    • Urethra: passage way of urine and sperm/ejaculate, made up of three segments (prostatic, membranous, and spongy)

    Female Reproductive System

    • Vulva: the overall outer part of the female reproductive system
    • Mons Pubis: where pubic hair resides, has a fatty covering
    • Clitoris: sensitive organ, equivalent of the male penis
    • Urethral Orifice: below the clitoris
    • Labia Majora: "greater lips", has Bartholin's gland that secretes lubrication for intercourse
    • Labia Minora: "lesser lips"
    • Hymen: tissue that covers the entrance of the vagina
    • Vagina: the entrance to the female internal reproductive organs
    • Cervix: lower portion of the uterus, contains mucus known as "cervical mucus"
    • Uterus: "womb", has inner layer (endometrium), middle layer (myometrium), and external layer (perimetrium)
    • Fallopian Tube: site of fertilization, also known as oviducts
    • Ovaries: female gonads that produce eggs ("ovum")

    Hormones

    • Testosterone: responsible for the development of male sex organs
    • Estrogen: female major hormone, responsible for sex drive
    • Progesterone: responsible for the development of the endometrium
    • Prolactin: responsible for the development of milk in the mammary gland
    • Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH): responsible for facial hair and sperm production in males, and progesterone production, maturation of egg cells, and ovulation in females
    • Luteinizing Hormone (LH): sends signals to the testes, responsible for estrogen production and maturation of egg cells in females
