Magnesium in the Body
- Magnesium (Mg2+) is the fourth most abundant cation in the human body and the second most abundant intracellular ion.
- An average 70 kg human body contains approximately 1 mole (24 grams) of magnesium.
- Bone stores about 53% of the total body magnesium.
- Muscle and other organs/soft tissue hold about 46%.
- Only less than 1% is found in serum and red blood cells.
- In serum, about one-third of the magnesium is bound to protein, primarily albumin.
- The remaining two-thirds of the serum magnesium are present in two forms: about 61% as a free/ionized ion, and about 5% as complexes with other ions like phosphate (PO4-) and citrate.
- Similar to calcium (Ca2+), the free, ionized form of magnesium is physiologically active.
