Study Notes
- Supporting fires are masked by the supporting unit requiring a SBF position displace.
- Minimizing ammo consumption and maximizing fire effects are covered by the economy of rounds.
- ADDRAC stands for Alert, Direction, Description, Range, Assignment, and Control.
- MORT stands for Method, Objective, Route, and Time.
- Echelon and Unit are methods of displacement within displacement criteria.
- By section is the way to employ in the offense.
- PRF and FPL are the two missions assigned to a MG in the defense.
- Burst of fire, Trajectory, Cone of fire, Beaten Zone, Dead Space, and Danger Space are characteristics of fire.
240 Rates of Fire
- Sustained rate of fire: 100 RPM, 6-8 rounds per burst, 4-5 second pause, barrel change every 10 minutes.
- Rapid rate of fire: 200 RPM, 6-8 rounds per burst, 2-3 second pause, barrel change every 2 minutes.
- Cyclic rate of fire: 550-650 RPM, barrel change every 1 minute.
M2A1 Rates of Fire
- Sustained rate of fire: 40 or less RPM, 6-9 rounds per burst, 10-15 second pause, barrel change at the end of the day.
- Rapid rate of fire: 40 or more RPM, 6-9 rounds per burst, 5-10 second pause, barrel change every hour.
- Cyclic rate of fire: 450-600 RPM, barrel change every 30 minutes.
MK19 Rates of Fire:
- Sustained rate of fire: 40 RPM, 6-9 rounds per burst, 10-15 second pause.
- Rapid rate of fire: 60 RPM, 6-9 rounds per burst, 8-10 second pause.
- Cyclic rate of fire: 325-375 RPM.
- Grazing and Plunging are the classes of fire with respect to Ground.
- Frontal, Flanking, Oblique, and Enfilade are the classes of fire with respect to the target.
- Fixed, Traversing, Searching, Searching & Traversing, Swinging Traverse, and Free Gun are the classes of fire with respect to the gun.
- 15 degrees is the prescribed distance for MSL's.
- Gunner Leader Rule is a method to establish an OSL when conducting overhead fire on undulating/un-level terrain.
Point, Area, Max Effective Range:
- 240: Point - 800m, Area - 1800m, Max Effective - 1800m
- M2A1: Point - 1500m, Area - 1830m, Max Effective - 1830m
- MK19: Point - 1500m, Area - 2212m, Max Effective - 2212m
- Swinging Traverse is the fire type to suppress a target needing major direction changes, not elevation.
- Fixed fire is used on a point target needing little to no manipulation.
- Flanking fire is delivered against the flank of a target, or the side/rear of an enemy formation.
- Enfilade fire is where the long axis of the beaten zone coincides or nearly coincides with the long axis of the target.
- Grazing fire is when the center of the cone of fire does not rise more than 1 meter above the ground.
- Fires in support of maneuver go beyond maneuver.
- Maneuver units immediate obj during the assault are fires in support of isolation.
- When units are most vulnerable to enemy counterattack means fires are in support of consolidation.
- Delivering against the most immediate & serious threat falls under fires in support of the assault.
- Interdicting and disrupting opponents before they get to the area defines long range fires.
- FPF refers to fires identified as FPL and can only be fired when authorized by the unit commander.
- Immediate threat to the units defense, primary EA defines close defensive fires.
