    Study Notes

    Liver Regeneration

    • Liver cells (hepatocytes) can be deleted due to various reasons, leading to liver necrosis and loss of liver tissue
    • Bordering cells can initiate a cascade of tissue repair through regeneration, where they divide and try to regrow the organ's architecture
    • If cells cannot divide, healing and fibrosis occur, resulting in loss of function but maintenance of organ architecture

    Injury Repair

    • In the case of a sliced finger, tissues cut through include fingernail, epithelial skin, muscle tissue, and nerve endings
    • Nerve cells do not divide, while skin cells divide rapidly
    • Within 24 hours, inflammation and repair processes begin, with leukocytes and fibroblasts coming to the area to lay down collagen and scar tissue
    • By 3-5 days, a new scar tissue forms to fill in the place of nerve and new skin tissue, known as granulation tissue

    Cell Types and Proliferation

    • Labile cells: able to proliferate
    • Stable cells: minimally proliferative
    • Permanent cells: terminally differentiated and non-proliferative in postnatal life
    • Cells replaced by mature stem cells and proliferation allow for regeneration
    • Regeneration capacity is limited in some cells

    Healing by Connective Tissue Repair

    • Unable to regenerate, repair is dominated by scar formation
    • Insufficient to reproduce tissue regeneration after injury

    Wound Healing

    • Primary union (1st intention): clean, surgically clean, sutures used, and healing results in a neat linear scar
    • Secondary union (2nd intention): may be infected, sutures not used, healing results in exuberant granulation tissue to fill the gap
    • Cleanliness and infection affect the healing process
    • Complications include contracted irregular scar, epidermal inclusion cyst formation, suppuration, and may require debridement
