Pathology of Liver

Acute Viral Hepatitis

  • Acute viral hepatitis is a diffuse inflammation of the liver caused by acute infection by hepatotropic viruses.
  • There are 5 well-characterized viruses that cause acute viral hepatitis:
    • Hepatitis A virus (HAV)
    • Hepatitis B virus (HBV)
    • Hepatitis C virus (HCV)
    • Hepatitis D virus (HDV)
    • Hepatitis E virus (HEV)
  • All 5 viruses produce similar patterns of clinical and morphologic acute hepatitis.
  • The viruses vary in their potential to induce:
    • Fulminant disease
    • Chronic hepatitis
    • Carrier state

Hepatitis A Virus (HAV)

  • HAV is an RNA virus.
  • It has a specific incubation period (I.P.).
