Study Notes
Pathology of Liver
Acute Viral Hepatitis
- Acute viral hepatitis is a diffuse inflammation of the liver caused by acute infection by hepatotropic viruses.
- There are 5 well-characterized viruses that cause acute viral hepatitis:
- Hepatitis A virus (HAV)
- Hepatitis B virus (HBV)
- Hepatitis C virus (HCV)
- Hepatitis D virus (HDV)
- Hepatitis E virus (HEV)
- All 5 viruses produce similar patterns of clinical and morphologic acute hepatitis.
- The viruses vary in their potential to induce:
- Fulminant disease
- Chronic hepatitis
- Carrier state
Hepatitis A Virus (HAV)
- HAV is an RNA virus.
- It has a specific incubation period (I.P.).
