Study Notes
Light Properties
- Light can behave as a wave or a particle, and is a form of energy
- A light wave is a vibration of electric and magnetic fields
- Light has a wavelength and a frequency
- Photons are particles of light
- Photons have a wavelength and a frequency
- The energy of a photon depends on its frequency
The Electromagnetic Spectrum
- The electromagnetic spectrum is the entire range of light wavelengths
- Human eyes can only see a limited range of light wavelengths, which is known as visible light
Interactions of Light with Matter
- The interaction between light and matter determines how everything around us looks
- There are four key interactions between light and matter:
- Emission: Objects emit light
- Absorption: Objects absorb light
- Transmission: Objects transmit light
- Reflection/Scattering: Objects reflect or scatter light
Properties of Waves
- Wavelength measures the distance between two wave peaks
- Frequency measures the number of times per second a wave vibrates up and down
- Wave speed is calculated by multiplying the wavelength by the frequency
Atomic Terminology
- Atomic number: number of protons in the nucleus of an atom
- Atomic mass number: number of protons plus the number of neutrons in the nucleus of an atom
- Molecules: consist of two or more atoms bonded together
- Isotope: same number of protons but different number of neutrons
Structure of Matter
- Matter is made of atoms
- Atoms have a nucleus consisting of protons and neutrons, surrounded by a cloud of electrons
Energy Levels in Atoms
- Electrons are restricted to particular energy levels within atoms
- Atoms gain and lose energy only in amounts corresponding to particular changes in energy levels
- Energy level transitions correspond to specific wavelengths of light that are emitted or absorbed
Spectra
- There are three basic types of spectra:
- Continuous spectra
- Emission line spectra
- Absorption line spectra
Doppler Shift
- The Doppler shift is a change in the observed frequency of a wave due to the relative motion of the source and the observer
- If an object is moving towards the observer, the wavelength decreases and the light appears blueshifted
- If an object is moving away from the observer, the wavelength increases and the light appears redshifted
Thermal radiation
- Nearly all large or dense objects, such as stars, planets, and humans, emit thermal radiation
- An object's thermal radiation spectrum is determined only by its temperature
- Hotter objects emit more light at all frequencies per unit area
- Hotter objects emit photons with a higher average energy
Learning from Light
- By analyzing spectra, we can learn about the composition, temperature, and motion of celestial objects.
