Study Notes
Characteristics of Leukemia
- Leukemia is a type of cancer that affects the blood and bone marrow.
- It is characterized by the rapid production of abnormal white blood cells, which interfere with the body's ability to fight infections.
Consequences on Bone Marrow
- Leukemia disrupts normal blood cell production in the bone marrow.
- This can lead to reduced numbers of red blood cells, resulting in anemia.
- There is also a decrease in healthy white blood cells, increasing the risk of infections.
- Platelet production is affected, leading to bleeding and bruising.
Infiltration of Leukemia Cells
- Leukemia cells can infiltrate various organs and tissues, including the liver, spleen, lymph nodes, and central nervous system.
- Extramedullary sites can also be affected, leading to symptoms related to those organs.
Definition of Leukemia
- A cancer of the blood-forming tissues, predominantly affecting bone marrow and lymphatic system.
- It leads to the overproduction of immature or dysfunctional white blood cells.
Classification of Leukemia
- Leukemia is classified into four main types:
- Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL)
- Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML)
- Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL)
- Chronic Myeloid Leukemia (CML)
- The classification is based on the speed of progression (acute vs. chronic) and the type of white blood cell affected (lymphoblastic vs. myeloid).
