- Leprosy is an infection caused by the slow-growing bacteria Mycobacterium leprae.
- It can affect the nerves, skin, eyes, and lining of the nose (nasal mucosa).
- Leprosy is also known as Hansen's disease.
- It can occur at all ages, ranging from early childhood to old age.
Incubation Period and Treatment
- The incubation period of leprosy can last several months or even years.
- Early treatment can prevent disability.
Types of Leprosy

Paucibacillary (Tuberculoid) Leprosy
- Characterized by 1 to 5 skin lesions, without demonstrated presence of bacilli in a skin smear.
Multibacillary (Lepromatous) Leprosy
- Characterized by more than five skin lesions or nerve involvement.
