The Roman Family
- The names of the people in the Roman family end in either -us (masculine) or -a (feminine), no names end in -um (neuter).
- The ending -us is characteristic of male persons, and -a of female persons.
- Examples of masculine names: Iūlius, Dāvus, Mārcus, Mēdus, Quīntus
- Examples of feminine names: Aemilia, Syra, Iūlia, Dēlia
Nouns
- Masculine nouns usually end in -us, examples: fīlius (son), servus (slave), dominus (master)

Interrogatives
- The interrogative words quis and quae; are used to ask questions about persons (referring to “who”):

- Quot is a neuter indeclinable interrogative adverb that asks questions about number (referring to “how many”):
- Quot līberī sunt in familiā? (How many children are in the family?)
Numbers
- The numbers one (ūnus), two (duo), and three (trēs) all have variations in their endings depending on gender and case.
- ūnus has the familiar endings -us, -a, -um
- the feminine of duo is duae (duae fīliae) and the neuter duo
- the neuter of trēs is tria (tria oppida); trēs refers to both masculine and feminine nouns.
- Other numbers in Latin are invariable, meaning they do not change their endings.
- Examples: mīlle (1000), centum (100)
