Study Notes

Percent

A percentage is a measure of one value relative to another. It represents part of a whole quantity, with the whole quantity being represented by 100%.

Percent to Fractions

To convert percent to a fraction, you follow these steps:

  1. Divide the number by 100.
  2. If the result has a decimal point, move the decimal point two places to the left. For example:
    • 50% = 0.5
    • 75% = 0.75
    • 90.67% = 0.9067

Percent to Ratios

Percent can also represent ratios when comparing values. For example, if something increases from 50% to 75%, it has doubled. This means there are twice as many units in the second quantity compared to the first. In this case, we can say that the ratio between the quantities is 2:1.

Percent to Decimal Numbers

Decimal numbers are any number to the right of the decimal point. They represent a portion of a whole. For example, 0.25 is a quarter of 1 unit, and 0.888 is 88.8% of 1 unit. To convert decimals to percentages, multiply them by 100 and append the % symbol.

Fractions to Percent

Convert a fraction to a percentage by dividing the numerator by the denominator and multiplying by 100. For example, (\frac{2}{5}) becomes (40%).

Ratios to Percent

Ratios can be converted into percentages by determining what proportion each part makes up of the whole. The sum of all parts must equal 100% if they represent different parts of the whole. However, the parts do not have to be equal. For example, if 2 out of every 5 people prefer beer over wine, then 40% of people prefer beer.
