Study Notes
Kingdom Monera
- Derived from the Greek word "monos", meaning single or solitary.
Definition
- Consists of ancient, single-celled prokaryotic organisms with no true nucleus.
- Cells may be solitary or form filaments or colonies.
Distribution
- Found in all types of environments on Earth.
- Some species can thrive in extreme environments, such as high temperatures, high salinity, alkalinity, or acidity.
General Characteristics
- Cell Nature: Simple, prokaryotic, sometimes forming filaments or colonies.
- Cell Size and Volume: Extremely small, microscopic, with a volume of 0.2-10.0 μm³, and a length of 0.1-5.0 μm.
- Cell Wall: Present, composed of peptidoglycan and polysaccharides, except in Archaeobacteria, where it is protein-based, and in Mycoplasma, where it is absent.
- Cytoplasm: Colorless, jelly-like, with no nuclear membrane-bound organelles or gas vacuoles, but with a nuclear body and primitive cytoskeleton.
- Nuclear Body: No true nucleus, but a nucleoid, which is a region with no nuclear membrane.
- Genetic Material:
- A single, circular, naked DNA molecule (no histone proteins) in the cytoplasm, which serves as the genetic material.
