Course Purpose
- Introduces the principles and the determinants of health and wellness
- Discusses lifestyle behaviors and chronic diseases
- Analyzes personal health behaviors and choices
- Covers both academic and life skills
Course Format: Class Component
- Classes are on Mondays and Wednesdays from 5:30pm – 7pm
- Lectures correspond to specific required readings, see course outline
- An outline of lecture notes will be posted online and is supplementary, not a substitution
- Students are responsible for the content of all required readings, lectures, videos, guest lectures, etc
Detailed Course Schedule
- Module 1 (Intro) will take place January 6th and 8th, and cover orientation to the course, and strategies for taking charge of personal health
- Module 2 (Psych Health) will take place January 13th and 15th, and cover Psychological Health Part I and II
- Module 3 (Stress) will take place January 20th and 22nd, and cover Lakehead Student Health and Wellness, and managing stress
- Module 4 (Health Promotion & Weight Management) will take place January 27th, 29th, and February 3rd covering tobacco free self and society, and weight management
- Module 5 (Nutrition) will take place February 10th and 12th covering Nutrition basics and involves Midterm 1
- Module 6 (Physical Activity) will take place February 24th and 26th, covering exercise and sport for health and fitness
- Module 7 (Chronic Disease & Indigenous Health) will take place March 3rd, 5th, 10th, and 12th covering cardiovascular and occupational health, and indigenous peoples health and histories
- Module 8 (Substance Use) will take place March 17th and 19th Midterm 2 covering drug use and addiction
- Module 9 (Aging, Wellness, & Decision Making) will take place March 24th, 26th, and 31st, and April 2nd, covering aging and environmental health
- The final exam is scheduled between April 7th and 17th
- Modifications to the lecture schedule are subject to change and will be announced during lecture and on the course webpage

Course Format: Tutorial Component
- Tutorials are similar to a "lab" format
- Tutorials will consist of smaller, group-based classes, with activities and assignments
- Tutorials involve discussing concepts from course content and are led by the same GA each week
- Tutorials do not occur every week; consult the course outline

- January 6: No tutorials
- January 13: APA, Reflective Writing, and First Year groups for the poster presentation due
- January 20: Psychological Health, Stress, and Mindfulness Activity
- January 27: Poster Workshop
- February 3: Nutrition Planning and Activity at 2%
- February 10: No Tutorials
- February 17: Reading Week
- February 24: Group Poster Presentations, E-posters due on D2L by Monday, January 4th by 11:59pm
- March 3: Library Session
- March 10: Indigenous Peoples and Health Activity at 3%
- March 17: No Tutorials
- March 24: Exercise and Sport for Health and Fitness at 2%

Course Structure: Tutorial Component
- Tutorials are 50 minutes per week
- Register ASAP
- "Group hopping" is not permitted
- Contact Dr. Newhouse with concerns ASAP
Course Evaluation
- Assignment outlines are on D2L
- An overview of assignments will be provided, it's advised to review D2L for details
Paper 1: Mindfulness Reflection
- During the week of January 27, a mindfulness video will be watched in tutorial
- Reflect on feelings prior to watching
- A two-page reflection paper which is due the following week, Thursday, January 30 by 11:59pm is required
- First paragraph should be a reflection from before watching the mindfulness video (about half a page) with the rest of the paper reflecting on the experience
Group Project: Group Poster Presentation
- During tutorial #1, groups for this project should be selected with a ranking of top 3 topics
- E-posters will be created and in tutorial, instruction will be give on how to make an academic e-poster
- The the week of February 24 presentations will be given dependent on tutorial day
- E-posters are due on Monday, February 24
- Team member evaluation form is due on Thursday, February 27
Paper 2: Scholarly Journal Article Summary and Reflection
- A pre-determined article posted on D2L is required to read
- First page is a summary with the rest is a critique
- The critique should decide on the strengths and weaknesses, bringing in two other articles and is due on Thursday, March 13
In-Tutorial Activities
- In-tutorial activities to complete for marks will be given during select tutorials
- Weeks of Feb 3, Mar 10, and Mar 24
- Represents 7% of the total mark
Connect Smartbook
- Online platform connecting with the textbook to keep up with notes/studying
- Must be paid for and an account made
- Completion of 10/12 weeks on time is needed for full marks, worth 10% of final full grade
- Due dates vary, mostly Sunday but some weeks have longer, like week 1
- Instructions are posted, a link will be shared to sign up and there is a help desk
- The first two weeks are due Sunday, January 19th, and have no exceptions

- Includes 30 concepts with an estimated duration of 52 minutes
Midterm Exams
- Midterms #1: February 10

- Each are worth 15%
- Format: Multiple Choice/True or False
Final Exam
- Worth 25%
- Same layout as midterms
- Scheduled between April 7 - 17
Course Evaluation
- There is no rounding of grades
- There is a 24 hour feedback policy
Late Penalty
- Assignments are due on the designated due date and submitted online through D2L
- Assignments submitted after the due date will receive a penalty of 10% per day, up to 3 days
- An assignment submitted more than 3 days late will be given a grade of zero:
Expectations
- There is a mutual code of conduct and respect in person and over email
- It is expected to come prepared and on time for class
- Cell phones for photos during class is prohibited

- Cheating and academic misconduct includes plagiarism, copying assignments, copying on an exam, and AI
- The results include a grade of 0, discussion with the director, and 0 for entire class and expulsion from program
