- The kidneys are responsible for producing urine and removing waste from the body.
- These bean-shaped organs are located in the retroperitoneal space, behind the peritoneum lining the abdominal cavity.
- The right kidney is slightly lower than the left, due to the position of the liver on the right side.
- The kidneys are located between the 11th and 12th ribs, behind and beneath the lower ribs.
- They are attached to the diaphragm and the abdominal wall.
- Urine travels from the kidneys through the ureters to the bladder, and then out of the body through the urethra.
Kidney Size and Weight
- Each kidney is approximately 11cm long, 5-7cm wide, and 2.5-3cm thick, although size can vary between individuals.
- The right kidney weighs roughly 135 to 155 grams, while the left kidney weighs approximately 115 to 135 grams.
