Keyboard Fundamentals

  • The standard keyboard used in America is the QWERTY keyboard.
  • A keyboard is both hardware and an input device.
  • Keyboards comprise alphabet keys, arrow keys, number keys, special function keys, a number keypad, and function keys.
  • A keyboard built into a computer that is used on the screen is called a touch-screen keyboard.

Keyboard Components

  • There are 12 function keys on a standard keyboard.
  • A wireless keyboard has no wires and uses Bluetooth.
  • Common special keys include Enter, Spacebar, Delete, Caps Lock, Backspace, Escape, Shift, Tab, Alternate, and Control.
  • The Shift key is used to make a character uppercase.
  • A shortcut key is a combination of keys, such as Ctrl + X (to cut). Ctrl is short for Control.
  • The ESC (Escape) key cancels an action.
  • Shortcut keys help complete tasks faster.
  • The Delete key deletes characters to the right of the cursor.
  • The Backspace key deletes characters to the left of the cursor.

Proper Typing Technique

  • When typing, focus your eyes on the monitor.
  • Rest your fingers on the home row keys (ASDF JKL;). The first part of the row (ASDF) is used by the left hand, and the second part (JKL;) is used by the right hand.
