    Study Notes

Artificial intelligence has been around for quite some time now, with its roots going back centuries ago. However, it wasn't until recent decades that AI truly began making waves in technological advancement. Some key events and milestones in the development of artificial intelligence include:

In the early days of computer science, Alan Turing developed one of the first truly theoretical studies of machine computation - his paper 'On Computable Numbers, With An Application To The Entscheidungsproblem', published in 1936. This laid much of the groundwork for future work in AI. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, John McCarthy coined the term "artificial intelligence" when he proposed that a real AI would have "a high degree of skill in understanding or doing very well things that human beings can do", and described how computers could simulate reasoning and learning processes.

The 1980s also saw the beginning of expert systems, which were among the earliest practical applications of AI. These involved programs designed to solve specific problems in fields like medicine, finance, and engineering by providing answers derived from knowledge stored in a database. One notable example is Mycin, created in 1972 by Edward Shortliffe et al., which was capable of diagnosing bacterial illnesses based on symptoms inputted into a computer.

Fast forwarding to more modern times, we see major developments such as deep neural networks being used to help machines learn through experience, machine vision technology, where computers understand images and videos they process, and machine translation software, allowing people to communicate across languages without needing interpreters. Deep Learning played a crucial role here; training algorithms—like those underlying speech recognition software—to recognize patterns hidden within large sets of data.

Today, we find ourselves surrounded by numerous examples of AI technology integrated into everyday life. From virtual assistants like Siri and Alexa, who respond verbally to our questions and commands, to self-driving cars using sensor information to navigate roadways, these technologies showcase the evolution of AI over several decades. As new breakthroughs continue to appear, it seems likely that we will only witness further advancements in this field.
