Policy Series 800: Member's Health
- The Kansas City Missouri Police Department prioritizes the physical and mental health of its employees.
- The department has a policy for physical and psychological examinations to ensure employees' fitness for duty.
Fitness-for-Duty Examinations
- Employees may be required to undergo a fitness-for-duty examination by a department-authorized physician, psychologist, psychiatrist, or medical provider.
- The examination is necessary when there is objective evidence that raises concerns about an employee's ability to perform their job or poses a danger to themselves or others.
Purpose of Fitness-for-Duty Examination
- To determine an employee's ability to perform essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodations.
- To determine if an employee is suffering from a physical or mental condition that poses a direct threat to themselves or others.
Procedure for Fitness-for-Duty Examinations
- Employees must report any incidents involving symptoms that could affect their job performance or pose a threat to themselves or others.
- Supervisors/commanders will evaluate the situation and may place the employee on limited duty or sick leave.
- Supervisors/commanders will submit a memorandum to the Human Resources Division (HRD) with objective facts and circumstances for the request of a fitness-for-duty examination.
HRD Review and Approval
- The HRD will review the memorandum and provide a recommendation to the Chief of Police.
- Upon approval, the employee will receive written notification to report for a psychological/psychiatric/medical examination.
Consequences of Non-Compliance
- Failure to comply with an order to submit for a fitness-for-duty examination may result in the employee using their own exception time during noncompliance.
- Non-compliance may lead to discipline for applicable policy violations.
Mandatory Medical Examinations
- Mandatory medical examinations or medical procedures will consist of tests, evaluations, and/or treatments recommended by the department's authorized physician and approved by the department.
- Mandatory medical examinations will be required for members employed in designated positions.
- The Employee Benefits Unit will schedule and notify employees of mandatory medical examinations.
