Compensation and Salary Administration
- The Kansas City Missouri Police Department's policy outlines procedures for salary administration and position classification.
- The policy is effective as of December 29, 2021, and replaces PPBM 403-8.
Terminology
- Accelerated Pay Adjustment: preauthorized pay based on obtaining certification(s) and years of experience.
- Anniversary Date: the 15th day of the month in which a member is eligible for an annual anniversary pay step increase.
- Anniversary Increase: an annual pay step increase based on availability of funds.
- Appointment Date (Internal): the date a sworn member was commissioned or re-employed.
- Change in Rank: a change in a sworn job classification due to a promotion or demotion.
- Change in Title: a change in a non-sworn job classification or designation within a sworn rank.
Personnel Actions and Salary Adjustments
- Demotion: when a non-sworn member is reclassified to a position with a lower pay range or a sworn member is reduced in rank.
- Employment Date: the date on which a member was employed or re-employed.
- Lateral Reclassification: the transfer of a non-sworn member from one position to another within the same pay range.
- Member Reclassification: a process for non-sworn members when there is a change in title or position (i.e., promotion or demotion).
- Merit Increase: a one-pay-step salary increase given to a non-sworn member in recognition of outstanding performance.
Out-of-Classification Assignments and Pay
- Out-of-Classification Assignment: a temporary assignment to assume the full duties in a position of higher rank or title.
- Out-of-Classification Pay: compensation received for assuming an out-of-classification assignment.
Pay Ranges and Steps
- Pay Range: the minimum to the maximum pay designated for a specific rank or job classification.
