Station Operations Standardization

  • JFRD SOP 214 aims to create uniform practices across all stations.

Site Safety Post-Inspection

  • After a state or federal agency inspects a JFRD station, the District/Battalion Chief must be notified.
  • The Chief of Safety must be notified and advised of the inspection results.
  • Any citations issued must be physically delivered to the District/Battalion Chief; if this is not possible, they should be contacted the same day.

Monthly Inspections

  • The District/Battalion Chief is responsible for conducting monthly station inspections, accompanied by the OIC.
  • Deficiencies are discussed with the OIC and recorded on the Monthly Station Inspection Form.
  • District Chiefs must submit completed Monthly Station Inspection Forms to the Deputy Chief of Operations by the 10th of each month.
  • Any health hazards to personnel or the public must be reported to the Chief of Operations immediately.
  • Stations deemed unsafe will result in the reassignment of the apparatus/crew to a safe, adjacent station until the original station is inhabitable.

  • Workload and the Company Officer's approval will determine rest period allowances.
  • Exceptions may be granted in cases of line-of-duty illness or extreme exhaustion

Mattress Upkeep

  • Mattresses and box springs must be stood on end and inspected daily, including bed rails, and aired out every Wednesday.
  • Bunkroom floors, including under beds, must be cleaned and mopped (hard surfaces) or vacuumed (carpet) daily.

Noise Curfew

  • Talking, radios, lights, and other disturbances are not allowed during permitted sleeping hours.
  • Disciplinary actions will be taken for those that continually disturb the accepted rest time will be subject to disciplinary action.

Floor Watch System

  • Station Captains will determine floor watch duties and responsibilities for station administrative functions.
  • The watch runs between 0700 and 2300 daily. Personnel on floor watch must stay near telephones and alarm terminals to properly receive and relay alarms and messages Backup must be arranged through your Company Officer if personnel on watch need to step away from their post

Protocol for Station Visitors

  • Upon entering a JFRD station, individuals should be greeted and offered assistance courteously
  • Effort should be made to aid them as requested (blood pressure checks, instructions, etc.)
  • When a Chief or City Official enters a JFRD station, all personnel shall stand and recognize them until instructed to resume their previous activities.
  • When possible give advanced warning to personnel of incoming visits.
  • Visitation is regulated by showing the utmost courtesy, restricting visitors to designated areas unless otherwise permitted, limiting visits to a reasonable duration, and maintaining work and training schedules.
  • Any visits undermining morale or disrupting station routines will be terminated by the Company Officer.
  • All visits must end by 2300 hours unless the Company Officer grants permission otherwise.
  • Visitors must comply with JFRD telephone rules.

Telephone Regulations

  • Incoming calls during training, physical fitness, or returning apparatus to service should be ended by personnel quickly.

Long Distance Calls

  • Long-distance calls are prohibited without Company Officer approval. Cost limitations may be applied
  • To make and receive the call, either bill the call or make it collect to the receiver's home phone or personal credit card.

Short Calls

  • Personal calls on JFRD phones are limited to a maximum of 5 minutes.

Using Directory Assistance

  • If needed telephone directions to a caller, use only telephone directories.

Answering Station Telephones

  • Personnel answering JFRD telephones should speak slowly, clearly, and enunciate to be understood and give their official information.
  • The proper procedure for answering telephones at JFRD stations includes giving the station number or facility title, their rank, and name.

Cellular Phone Usage

  • Use of personal cellular devices is completely restricted while responding to emergencies and on emergency scenes. On-duty personnel should turn off ringers or place phones on vibrate.

  • All dogs are handled and trained as people; at all times, JFRD personnel will interact with dogs with handler approval only.
  • Dogs are not allowed in the kitchen, eating areas, and personnel sleeping areas
  • All canines are to be kept in kennels at all times while not under handler supervision or in the event of the handler needing to be away on duty.
  • Canines that showcase aggressive behaviour are NOT tolerated to keep any personnel safe
